(Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee)
SOCHUM (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee) is the third main committee of the United Nations General Assembly, focusing on human rights, humanitarian aid, and social development. Since 1945, it has promoted international cooperation and fundamental freedoms by developing solutions to global issues such as refugees, children’s rights, racism, and women’s rights.
SOCHUM’s Key Features and Areas of Work:
Focus: Human rights, humanitarian affairs, social development, and cultural diversity.
Tasks: To investigate human rights violations, develop policies for social issues, and prepare reports on issues such as refugee crises and children’s rights.
Scope: Addresses issues involving specific groups such as children’s rights, women’s rights, indigenous peoples’ rights, the rights of people with disabilities, crime prevention, and drug control.
Aim: To build a more just and humane world through international cooperation and to produce decisions that will affect the practices of member states.
